Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Richard James Cunningham, fondly known as Dickie, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and dedication. Born and raised in Holmesburg, Richard was a lifelong resident of Northeast Philadelphia and was educated at St. Dominic School and St Joe's Prep. and St. Joe's University.

Richard was a U.S. Army Veteran and Korean War survivor. He worked as a Medic while honorably serving his country and was a Bronze Star recipient. His service to his country was a testament to his courage and strength, but it was his love for his family and community that truly defined him. Richard was a dedicated family man who, in 1957 alongside his brother Jim, built a successful business, Cunningham Bros. Overhead Doors, which still operates today under the leadership of his sons. His work ethic was unparalleled, he also built the home he lived in for the last 61 years.

Richard is survived by his children; Susan, Jane Underwood, Matthew, Andrew (Helen), Thomas, Anne Costello, Daniel (Cheryl), and Stephen (Kelly) Cunningham. He will also be deeply missed by his 19 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 68 years, Josephine V. (nee Adams) Cunningham; his parents, Anne R. (nee Ryan) and Thomas R. Cunningham, Sr.; and his siblings, Thomas R. Cunningham, Jr., Patricia O'Brien, James J. Cunningham, Mary V. Cunningham and Carole A. Connelly. Richard's memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who loved him, and his legacy of hard work, resilience, and love for his family will continue to inspire future generations.

All relatives and friends are welcome to attend his viewing on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, from 10:00 am until 11:15 am at Our Lady of Calvary Church, 11024 Knights Road, Philadelphia, PA 19154, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am.
