Atkinson C. Holmes Obituary (1929 - 2015)

Atkinson "Ack" Holmes age 86, beloved husband of 62 years of Margaret "Peggy" Holmes (nee Stewart), passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2015 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. Atkinson was born to Thomas and Ella Holmes on June 1, 1929 and was a lifelong resident of Holmesburg and Mayfair. He married his beloved Peggy on September 12, 1953 and together they raised their children Margaret "Marge" Holmes of Havertown, Pa, Susan Dudt of Hiram, Ga and James Holmes of Downingtown, Pa. He was a dedicated and encouraging father and grandfather. Until his decline in health, Ack was an active member of Mayfair Presbyterian Church and previously the First Presbyterian Church of Holmesburg. He demonstrated love through cooking church breakfasts and assisting with needs of his neighbors and family. He provided transportation for Peggy as she served in the ministries of the Presbyterian Children's Village and the Ladies Aid Society of Philadelphia . During the 70's he was an active committee chair and member of BSA Troop 75 and was a parent chaperone for the Academy Boys Choir. As a child of the Depression he learned the value of working hard amidst the economic times of the 1930s and 40s. As a young man he worked with his father and brother servicing fire extinguishers with Keystone Protection and Holmes Fire Protection. He then was self employed in his business, Holmes Installations. During this time he also worked as the night manager of the Satellite Diner. He completed his career working for over 40 years as a cabinet maker for Hecker Office Furniture Company. Mr. Holmes honorably and loyally served our country during the Korean War. Ack was an avid reader. The table beside his favorite chair in his home always contained a book which he was reading. He thoroughly enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and providing answers for Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, displaying the knowledge gained from his love of reading. In addition to his wife and children and their spouses, Mr. Holmes is survived by 8 grandchildren; Matthew, Sarah, Anna and Jessica Dudt and Ryan, Jamie, Joshua and Meghann Holmes as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edward Holmes, Archibald Holmes, John Holmes and sisters Grace Shisler and Mary Barker. Visitation will be at Lambie Funeral Home (8000 Rowland Ave. Philadelphia 19136) on Thursday, September 10 from 5:00 until 7:00 . The funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 7:00 . A brief graveside service and internment will be held on Friday morning at 9:00 at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, Pennsylvania. Some of Mr. Holmes last words were a request that his children convey his farewell to his relatives and friends. Those who he loved were on his mind and heart as he left us to be with the Lord. Visitation will be at Lambie Funeral Home (8000 Rowland Ave. Philadelphia 19136) on Thursday, September 10 from 5 :00 until 7:00 . The funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 7:00 . A brief graveside service and internment will be held on Friday morning at 9:00 at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, Pennsylvania
