Obituary for Stephen Robert Werner

Stephen R. Werner age 27 passed away on June 15, 2018 after a long struggle with addiction. Beloved son of Michael and Donna Werner and the late Elizabeth Werner. He was the loving brother of David Wichterman (Corinna), Shaun Johnson (Paul), Jessica Werner, and the late Deana and Daniel Wichterman. He will be lovingly missed by Merissa Snyder, grandmother “Gambo” Rita Werner, nieces Mia, Chloe, nephews, Caleb, Gavin, Owen, Leo, aunts, uncles, cousins, dear friends and his many four-legged friends, especially Meeko and Mumford.
Steve was a truly special individual who had the unique ability to make anyone in his presence feel loved and important, and fill a room with laughter. Those who knew Steve will remember his powerful hugs, quick wit, love of music festivals, and ability to fill out a pair of jeans. He was often the one to lead when it came to having a good time, whether it was with grade school, high school, or college friends, or his beloved family members. Numerous times, he was the driving force behind a truly epic good time and was a connector of people to each other.
He excelled as a student and was a gifted athlete, particularly in lacrosse. He was a graduate of North Catholic High School, and held a B.A. in Marketing from Bloomsburg University. He had a thirst for learning and new experiences and a healthy competitive streak that truly shone through at his family’s annual Christmas Party Games, where he would always give 110 percent for his team.
Steve had a passion for music that was unrivaled and spanned genres and generations. Bands and songs were the backdrop for all of his best moments in life, and no experience was complete for him without just the right song or playlist. He reveled in attending concerts and music festivals and would get wide-eyed talking about parts of show he loved or a band he saw for the first time.
Steve loved life and had limitless potential. What started with experimentation with opioids turned into full-blown addiction and a sickness that robbed him of that potential and replaced the things that he held most dear in life. He wasn’t ready to die and did not want to die, but the disease of addiction proved to be his greatest battle. He fought hard to live and overcome his sickness – and tried so many times – but like too many others, lost his battle with the disease of addiction. His loss will be felt deeply by the many individuals and lives he touched in his young life.
Steve would want his story to help save lives. If you are reading this and have young people in your life, help them understand that prevention is the best treatment. Talk to your children and others in your life about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, particularly opioids and heroin. Help them understand that addiction can start with experimental use in social situations and that what will follow is a long battle that will rob them of their potential and oftentimes ends tragically.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet his family Wednesday evening June 20, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Lambie Funeral Home, 8000 Rowland Avenue (At Rhawn Street), Philadelphia. His memorial service will follow Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be private at the family’s request. In lieu of flowers please send memorial donations to School of Rock, 421 North 7th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123 or Camp Mariposa, One Penn Center, 1617 JFK Blvd, Suite 935, Philadelphia, PA 19103 or at https://moyerfoundation.org/donate/ in Steve’s honor.
